Baja, Mexico – Part 2 Blog: Baja Dreaming

April 8th, 2014

Baja California Sur is truly where the desert meets the sea. And the aptly named Rancho Pescadero is one of the more enticing locales in which to experience the best of Baja. There is the breathtaking beauty of a Mexican outpost that offers the guest a 360 degree view of a spectacular stretch of pristine ocean beach dotted with date palms, adobe style local architecture, and the dramatic escarpment of distant mountain ranges. It’s kind of Marrakech meets Mexico. If this wasn’t enough, the annual humpback and sperm whale migrations literally float past the doorstep, cementing it as a unique must-do destination.

Rancho Pescadero is found at the end of a long and dusty potholed road. With rustic yet super comfy chic minimalist décor, it is a simply gorgeous resort and the definition of pared back cool. The guests are international and the vibe is relaxed, or as the resort describes it ‘stylish slacking’. At night, the romance is dialed up in the form of lanterns and stunning outdoor lighting.

DBLS spent much time on the rooftop terrace overlooking and being inspired by the turquoise tiled and terracotta adobe-style pool area. The well-shaded terrace (see our photos) has spectacular views out to the ocean and back to the dramatic escarpment of the jagged Sierra de La Laguna mountain range. We lost count of the number of breaching whales we saw from here. And both the menu and drinks were no less impressive than the setting. Indeed, the strawberry mojitos that are served here are worthy of special mention!

It’s over all too quickly and DBLS is reluctant to leave. We drive out under the ranch gates bearing the words Hasta La Vista Amigo! reminding us that between friends there is never goodbye, only farewell and… see you soon!
